As summer comes to a close in Frederisckburg, there are still some activities and attractions you and your family should check out on those last few days before school starts and before vacation days run out. In this article, Robert B Payne looks at some activities for the whole family.
Investigate the Civil War
Because of its strategic position halfway between the capitals of the Union and Confederacy, you’ll find plenty of Civil War sites in Fredericksburg. From Civil War battlefields to the Sunken Road, Civil War history echoes throughout the area.
Learn About George Washington
If a cherry tree was chopped, it might have been right here at George Washington’s boyhood home at Ferry Farm. Today you can tour the 80-acre grounds where the Washington home once stood, visit an 18th century garden and view colonial and Civil War artifacts found on the property.
Shop, Shop, and Shop Some More
Whether you do your hunting at Old Town Fredericksburg’s specialty boutiques, antiques, museum shops and art galleries, or explore local farm markets and national retailers throughout the area, shopping in the Fredericksburg area is a must.
Spend Some Time Outside
Outdoor activities at parks and waterways around Fredericksburg are calling your name. Boat, swim, hike and picnic at popular Lake Anna State Park, fish the Rappahannock and Rapidan Rivers, go rock climbing at Virginia Outdoor Center. Nature walks and horseback riding, kayaking and biking – this is your playground.
Visit the Local Haunts
The site of so much history and so many souls lost in battle, the haunted streets of Fredericksburg may be home to more ghosts per capita than any other city in America. Help us prove it on a seasonal Ghost Tour to hear tales of ghostly apparitions and possibly encounter one yourself.
