Troubleshooting of a Heating System

At Robert B. Payne, Inc., we know how important it is to keep your heating system up and running in your Fredericksburg home. If your furnace is not functioning the way you would expect, there are a few troubleshooting tips you can try before you call an HVAC company.

Clean the Area

About once a year it would be a good idea to vacuum out the area around the furnace’s blower. If at all possible, carefully slide out the fan unit and then clean each fan blade with a small toothbrush. Once you’ve done that, then vacuum the area with a brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner. This will clear debris and build up off your unit and could be a fairly quick and easy fix to a heating unit that isn’t functioning at it’s best.

Suspect a Gas Leak?

Deal with this immediately. If you smell natural gas in your Fredericksburg home or near the unit, don’t switch off/on any switches, or light a match. If the smell is especially strong, evacuate the house and call a professional to come and take care of the issue.

Not Enough Heat

If your heating system is putting out heat but not enough, check these troubleshooting options out:

  1. Make sure nothing is blocking the flow of warm air.
  2. Check your thermostat. Adjust the temperature up by five degrees, wait a few minutes and see if there is a change.
  3. Make sure the vents in each room are open so the air can circulate.
  4. Is the filter dirty? If so, replacing the filter could solve the problem.
